Swansea E-News

Welcome to my fortnightly newsletter.

In local news, it was great to host so many wonderful volunteers and acknowledge their dedication at the local community awards. Our community is also set to benefit from an investment in emergency response beacons to help save lives along our coast.

In state news, the Government is delivering on our election commitment to rebuild our health system with the overdue planned surgery waitlist having been reduced by 85% in the last 12 months.

The Community Notice Board contains information on EnableNSW Continence Aids Payment Scheme and a community arts competition.

Cutting Surgery Waitlists

When the NSW Labor Government was elected in March 2023, one of our first acts was to establish Surgical Care Governance Taskforce to tackle the backlog in overdue elective surgeries.

The taskforce has proven extremely effective with 12,000 less people now waiting for an overdue procedure. That represents an 85% reduction in the overdue waitlist.

One of the ways the taskforce was able to achieve these results was by expanding the category of procedures eligible for same day surgery. These include hernia repair; gallbladder removal; tonsil removal; deviated septum surgery; and sinus surgery.

Alongside the taskforce, the NSW Government is taking pressure off our hospitals by rolling out 25 urgent care services across NSW, empowering pharmacists to prescribe certain medications, increasing the use of virtual care, and making it easier for doctors in regional health districts to work in both GP and hospital settings.

We are also delivering major boosts to the workforce across NSW by rolling out safe staffing levels and making 1,112 temporary nurses permanent.

Tackling Youth Crime

This week I joined the Premier, Minister Dib, the Police Commissioner and NRL stars Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker to launch project pathfinder.

It’s a wonderful new program that’s giving teenagers from our regions mentoring and opportunities through the NRL.

This is all about the NSW Police Force, NRL and Youth Justice NSW using the power of sport to help break the cycle.

Project pathfinder is part of a broader NSW Government initiative to tackle youth crime. This includes reforms to bail laws to include a temporary additional bail test for young people between 14 and 18 charged with committing certain serious break and enter offences or motor vehicle theft offences while on bail for similar offences.

The government has also created a ‘performance crime’ offence in the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW)imposing an additional penalty of two years’ imprisonment for people who commit motor vehicle theft or break and enter offences and share material to advertise their involvement in the criminal behaviour.

The NSW Government is also investing

$12.9 million to fund a new range of state-wide regional crime prevention initiatives including:

  • Expansion of Youth Action Meetings (YAMs) in nine Police Districts.

  • Expansion of the Safe Aboriginal Youth Patrol Program (SAY) to an additional five Closing the Gap (CTG) priority locations (to be determined in consultation with communities), reducing the risk of young Aboriginal people being victims of crime, and the risk they will become persons of interest in relation to a crime.

  • $7.5 million in Justice Reinvestment grants with grant funding available to recipients as early as June 2024.

Our community will directly benefit from this investment with a YAM to be established in the Lake Macquarie Police District and the Tuggerah Lakes/ Brisbane Waters Police District. These YAMs will bring together an interagency response to deal with youth offenders.

Saving Lives on Our Coast

The NSW Government is investing in new Emergency Response Beacons to be installed at Moonee and Frazer Park beaches by the end of the year.

ERBs directly connect callers to Surf Life Saving NSW’s State Operations Centre, enabling the rapid deployment of lifesaving and emergency services to a potential rescue site. This can drastically reduce response times, particularly in unpatrolled or isolated areas.

We have seen far too many people lose their lives at Moonee Beach and Frazer Park Beach, these ERBs are critical to ensuring we make these beaches as safe as possible.

Investing in Local Jobs

The recent Solar Sunshot announcement by Anthony Albanese at Liddell Power Station isn't just a billion-dollar Labor investment in the Hunter.

It says to our region that our past matters, and so does our future.

Liddell employed locals who took pride in their work.

Now it has a solar manufacturing future and locals will be part of that.

Singleton, Ravensworth, Muswellbrook.

The NSW Government is backing these communities with the Net Zero Manufacturing Initiative, with a $275 million first round to support workers, small business, manufacturers and innovators.

This is a huge step towards a sustainable future for us, made by us, here.

Great to have my NSW Government colleagues Penny Sharpe MLC and Courtney Houssos in the Hunter to be part of it.

Cost of Living

Cost of living is an issue impacting every household and the NSW Government offers several rebates for families, seniors and small businesses.
