NSW GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN DEBATE ON TAFE
Leading the debate for the Opposition, Ms Catley said that under the Baird Government’s Smart and Skilled program, student enrollments are down by more than 40,000 – with 80,000 fewer students enrolled in TAFE than in 2012, and thousands of TAFE teachers and staff have been sacked.
Ms Catley labelled the so called Smart and Skilled program nothing more than a poorly disguised ideological attack on public vocational education.
Quotes attributable to the Member for Swansea, Yasmin Catley MP:
“The Liberal National Government has taken the wrecking ball to our TAFE system.”
“With youth unemployment at 12.4 per cent, young people should be provided with an affordable avenue to enter the workforce by learning new skills or retraining to get a good job.”
“Instead we have this government forcing students to abandon studies because they can’t afford an education under this regime.”
“The people in the electorate of Swansea are very worried about our local campus, Belmont TAFE. As one of the 27 campuses earmarked by this Minister for closure, opportunities for our young people to train and take apprenticeships will be gone, and so will the opportunities for those in my electorate looking to re-train or upskill.”
